The United Methodist Church
Christ Church is part of The United Methodist Church, which has a history reaching back to John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Movement in England in the 18th century. As the United States of America was getting established, Wesley sent Francis Asbury and Thomas Coke to lead the Methodist people. In 1784, the Methodist Episcopal Church was founded at what was called the “Christmas Conference” in Baltimore, Maryland. After splitting over the issue of slavery in the middle of the 19th century, the Methodists reunited in 1939. Then in 1968, the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church came together to form The United Methodist Church.
The UMC is made up of churches on four continents, with members primarily coming from the United States and Africa.
