Devotion:

Read  John 13:3-15

Jesus gathers his disciples in an upper room to celebrate the Passover. When the supper is over Jesus washes the disciples feet. It is not easy to watch Jesus wash the disciple’s feet.  To see the hands of God messaging the toes of men just doesn’t seem right.  While the disciples argue over who is the greatest, a basin sits in the corner, untouched.  The towel is on the floor, unused.  As they argue among themselves, Jesus takes a pitcher and pours water into the basin, kneels before them and began to wash the disciple’s feet.  It doesn’t seem right. Isn’t it enough that his hands and feet will be pierced for them tomorrow?  Must he kneel-down and scrub the filth off their feet today?

Jesus came to serve!  The story of Jesus washing the disciple’s feet amazes us.  A King behaving like a servant. I don’t understand how God can be so kind to us, but he is.  He kneels before us, takes our feet in his hands, and washes them.  We must understand that in washing the disciple’s feet, Jesus is washing ours.  You and I are in this story. Let us take Jesus’ example to heart and go forth and serve others.

Personal Worship Option:

Precious Jesus, we come before You humbled by this powerful example of servanthood. You are the King of Kings, yet You knelt like a servant. While others sought greatness, You chose humility. Wash us, Lord. Cleanse the pride from our hearts, the selfishness from our thoughts, and the sin that clings so closely to us. Help us to receive Your grace with humility. We thank You that You came not to be served, but to serve. In Your holy name we pray, Amen.
